DUDES. So I'm watching the Castle episode "The Fifth Bullet," in which Riley Finn Marc Blucas is a crime victim with amnesia. The psychologist they've brought in gives the "three kinds of memory" speech, and in a narcissistic moment, I think "Huh, that's basically a paraphrase of the explanation Carson gives John over the phone in Unidentified."

Then, as they're all sitting awkwardly there because no one knows what to call Blucas, Castle suddenly grabs a form, passes it to him, and tells him to sign his name.

And all I'm hearing in my head now is Andrew Welles in the BtVS episode "Storyteller," yelling, "Damn you, get out of my head!"

#5. For K., who said, I think what I'd like most in the world is some small snippet from college life with John, Rodney, and Carson as roommates, from Unidentified-verse. SGA AU, takes place two years after the first flashback in Unidentified. As mentioned in the DVD commentary, the original draft of Jeannie and John's phone conversation referred to this incident.

[1994. November.] 'Well, it'll do what you want it to do,' Carson says as he rounds the corner into Rodney's lab, 'but I'm not sure you've got the chemical composition quite right.' )

Okay, so that was a longer gap there then I meant it to be, but my time was filled up with awesome people being hilarious and distracting, so I really can't manage to feel that bad. Hopefully you all won't hold it against me.

#4. This is for M., who requested Coda, after the end of the concert, please. SGA AU, probably makes little sense if you haven't read Unidentified and Coda.

2009. March. When it comes to some things, John's always been content to improvise. )

#3. This one is for V., who said, If you would write me a little teensy bit of Rodney back-story from before the event that precipitates 'Unidentified' I will be your slave ever so pleased and happy. (Especially if there is sex.) SGA AU, adult, probably makes little sense if you haven't read Unidentified. Expands on a very vague hint dropped in the conversation in the kitchen in Canon for Two Instruments.

2005. October. The one time it happens, it's entirely unintentional. )

There is nothing to restore my engagement with the universe on a day when I have been feeling generally crappy like:

Title: Unidentified
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] justbreathe80
Summary: Fourteen years, eight months, and seven days after John and Rodney meet, the clock starts all over again.
Notes: SGA, AU, McKay/Sheppard. Text and supplemental materials here (or read the text on one page on my website here).
Time: 2:59:52 (123.5 MB).

Up at the SGA Podfic community here, and please please remember to leave feedback for the reader.

I'm downloading right now, and then I expect to explode.

ETA: Ahahahaha, got so excited I swapped an lj-name tag for a cut tag. Fixed now.

Title: Canon for Two Instruments
Summary: They fog the glass and leave their handprints all over it, until all that shows in John's periphery is the city blurred out into smudges of color, gold and orange and deep blue. The missing scene from part three of Unidentified (index post here).
Details: NC-17, McKay/Sheppard, AU, ~5300 words.
Notes: Sincere thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shaenie, [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings, and (way back in the day) [livejournal.com profile] secrethappiness for betaing, to [livejournal.com profile] cindyjade (again, because), and to the handful of people who read this over the last few months and assured me that it was good enough to post.

Download the soundtrack.

John can feel his own pulse beating just below the surface as Rodney steps in closer, and he shuts his eyes without meaning to. 'What if you're wrong?' he asks, hearing the desperate edge in his own voice, the way the words come out frayed around the edges. )

I can't call it long-awaited, but it sure as hell is long. I started this back in September -- it took a few months to write and more toil than bears enumerating for poor, dedicated [livejournal.com profile] anatsuno to code (Ana: thank you), but it's finally going live.

DVD Commentary for Unidentified
Including:
- thorough spoilers for both Unidentified and the Coda (index post here)
- many theories about various topics
- exuberant love for fandom and the people in it
- excised text and snippets
- anecdotes about several embarrassing screw-ups
- more meta than you can shake a stick at, and
- revelation of at least a couple of big secrets (though I can't predict what you'll think of what I have to say).

Read the commentary at my website, because it is way, way too long to divide into LJ posts.

I don't know how many of you will opt to wade through this, but if you do, I'd be really interested to hear what you think.

Coda

Title: Coda
Details: PG, ~6,800 words, McKay/Sheppard. Set a year and a half after the end of Unidentified.
Summary: In music: a more or less independent passage, at the end of a composition, introduced to bring it to a satisfactory close.
Notes: Spoilers for the original story, and this won't make much sense if you haven't read that. If you liked where Unidentified left off, there's no particular need to read this; I wrote it to satisfy my own curiosity about what happened down the line. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] secrethappiness for betaing.

'Write the algorithms and a computer could do this -- structure, harmonies, dynamics, the whole shebang,' Rodney told him. 'If your instructions were thorough enough, it might even sound pretty good. But that doesn't mean it'd be music.' )

To say that I'm overwhelmed by the response to this story would be a major understatement. I'm completely blown away, and a lot of you have left comments that I really want to respond to, but it's going to take me a while to work through them. So in the meantime, I'm expressing blanket gratitude -- to everyone who's read this story and left feedback (just, wow), to everyone who recced it (apparently, there's a lot of you, and I have no idea who's doing it, but thanks), and extra bonus thanks to the handful of you who were kind enough to catch minor typos, coding, and grammar errors for me.

Some days, fandom really does rock the hardest.

Unidentified
Fourteen years, eight months, and seven days after John and Rodney meet, the clock starts all over again.
An SGA AU inspired by the documentary Unknown White Male. PG-13, ~30,000 words, McKay/Sheppard.

A/N: Very vague spoilers through season 3 (just background info on the characters, no references to canon plot). No warnings (that I can think of, anyway). Borrowed elements used respectfully (and not for profit). Huge thanks to my instigator and head cheerleader [livejournal.com profile] cindyjade; to [livejournal.com profile] celli for encouragement, suggestions, and some really helpful feedback; to [livejournal.com profile] secrethappiness for random acts of kindness and multiple rounds of betaing; to [livejournal.com profile] lizbetann for providing LA info to a total stranger; and to [livejournal.com profile] heyiya, who somehow did all of the above. And last but certainly not least, many thanks to my wonderful girlfriend, who loaned me her knowledge of planes and of the U.S. military, who talked through whole sections with me and never let on if she was bored, and who quietly rearranged her habits to allow me to hog the computer for two months straight.

Download the soundtrack.

Soundtrack notes (warning: very spoilery for the story)
A gorgeous, gorgeous cover by the fantastic [livejournal.com profile] wychwood.
Two variant covers by [livejournal.com profile] fatema (who hopefully won't mind that I couldn't resist linking to them both).
A mind-alteringly beautiful cover by [livejournal.com profile] aesc (*new!)

Enjoy!

Rodney blurts out, 'I'm in a hospital in Santa Barbara,' and John wrenches his car across three lanes of traffic and leaves half the tread of his tires on the shoulder as he hits the brakes. )
