Star Trek: definitely good enough that I'll stop referring to it as "Barely Legal."

Oh my god, that was delightful. I can't remember the last time I saw a scifi film that was funnier on purpose than it was by accident, or that gave such high-quality fan service. And thank god, it turned out I was watching it in the company of other geektastic film-talkers, all of whom are wired for double entendres, so they were right there with me when things happened like:

- Sulu, famously first played by a gay actor, was saved by a manly embrace
- Spock implied to Bones that Kirk was a stallion in need of breaking
- Old!Spock told young!Spock that, not to worry, he'd take care of studding "cultivating" the new Vulcan race

I can't describe the joy I got listening to the lovely heterosexual nerdboy next to me lose it giggling over the "transformative friendship" speech, or [livejournal.com profile] misshepeshu telling me as we bolted for the bathroom that she now understood what it means for something to slash itself, because (and I quote) "those glances are so smoldering that someone's pants are going to catch on fire."

I loved it too much to care that it was imperfect, because some films are just somehow better for things like excruciating birth/battle scenes (one of the people I was with, who will remain nameless, flipped us all off when we looked over and she was crying), bad cameos (Jennifer Morrison? really?), Uhura's inevitable lack of substantive action (anyone else think Zoe Saldana watched a bunch of BSG eps and cribbed off of Katee Sackhoff?), and the fact that, as [livejournal.com profile] misshepeshu put it, black holes work like trampolines, or as I put it, physics by Katamari Damacy. All texts are flawed, scifi texts as much or more than most -- the original series was flawed as hell, and this had its moments, but it came by all those flaws so honestly and with such heart. I'm totally going again when it hits second-run here and I can watch it while drinking a beer and eating a slice of pizza.

In the meantime, somebody here point me to the Kirk/Spock/Uhura? Or really, any fic from the film.
