Hoisting my stuff onto Ao3 -- any tips?

Hello! Incredibly long time, no see. I am alive and well despite my invisibility on the internet, and check my reading page semi-regularly to see how you all are doing.

As I join the 21st century, learn how the hell tumblr works, etc. etc., it's occurred to me that I should probably get off my ass and upload my fic to Ao3 to make them easier to track down. This is likely to happen gradually, so let me know if there's anything you'd really like to see go up sooner rather than later. (Also, if anyone knows any neat tricks to make the transferring process go smoothly ...)

Hope you're all doing well. It's Friday, it's sunny, I'm about to get some hair whacked off, I have remarkably few complaints.

Homeland 1x07, "The Weekend."

1x07 was not a flawless episode, but it contained some of the smartest moves I've seen on television in a long time. The last time a show that effectively set up a relationship/central tension that could've fueled a season, then exploded it because there were more interesting things to do, I was watching The Wire.

Also, all my ethnic pride is clamoring for Saul to have a BAMF episode. Seriously.

I am genuinely excited by this show.

There was literal lol'ing just now.

The best thing about Strunk/White fanfiction is that it's virtually guaranteed to be well-written.

Oh xkcd. You make me happy when skies are gray.

Because there's no rage like nerd rage.

Sidecar Comedy, an outfit co-masterminded by a guy I lived with in college, has made a rap out of the unquenchable ire that comes from watching nerdy things you loved unreasonably getting screwed up by the people who make money off of them

I laughed my ass off. Also, I think this should be in every dictionary as the definition of "first world problems."

Wow. How have we not done this yet?

If AO3 if an accurate indication, we have somehow gone through nearly ten years of Yuletide without anyone requesting Sappho. How on Earth did we all miss this? Somebody, please, tell me I'm wrong -- I did a tag search and couldn't find a single thing in the archive.

Out of curiosity, if I decamped from my overly long hiatus and threw a queer* authors/poets throughout the ages challenge, would any of you be interested in participating?

* Yes, yes, wildly historically anachronistic term. It's Friday, I got a hyphen, two slashes, and several words in to trying to come up with a better one, and then my head started to hurt and I gave up.

Double podfics!

I just got back from a trip to Peru (which is AMAZING, omg, I recommend this country to everyone ever who likes history, nature, food, street markets, or people), and found that the lovely [personal profile] anatsuno had recorded a podfic of one of my favorite of my SGA stories!

Title: Battle Potato
Reader: [personal profile] anatsuno
Summary: The thing was, John had never been good at patient, and Teyla looked like okay was a couple of galaxies over from wherever she was now.
Notes: SGA, team, gen. Text here
Length: 40 mn, 19MB mp3.

Download (and leave her feedback!) here.

Receiving the news of that podfic reminded me that I've been completely remiss in linking to another one posted a while back, by the fantastic [personal profile] fishpatrol .

Title: I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal (And I Just Don't Get Any Respect)
Reader: [personal profile] fishpatrol
Summary: "All right," Nate says, and smacks his hands together. "Let's go steal a con artist."
Notes: White Collar/Leverage crossover, team, as gen as either canon. Text here.
Length: 39 mn, 35MB mp3.

Download (and leave her feedback!) here.

This is a good time to say again that I give blanket permission to record my stories -- I adore podfic, and if you feel moved to share your reading of it with others, I would love to hear it. Please drop me a comment so I can spread the word!

Out of curiosity ...

Does anyone reading this journal speak Farsi or Mandarin?

I've got the seeds of an original writing project that's going to use the occasional word or phrase in each of those languages. I'll be doing my own research (both lingual and cultural) as much as possible, but it'd be useful to be able to send over the occasional batch of sentences to make sure I've got appropriate words and names in context. Also, I'd really love to know whether I'm mentally pronouncing my characters' names right. *chagrin*

If I successfully turn this from idea to substance, I may post again in the future looking for Persian/Iranian or Han-Chinese cultural betas, but that's far off and offering up lingual spot-checks by no means volunteers you for any other duties.

Thanks as always, internets!

WIP #2 [DW]: Led to Light.

Explanatory notes: I frickin' adore Amy Pond.

Why is this story (probably) not abandoned? Because I frickin' adore Amy Pond. However, the opening scene of this story has been thoroughly Jossed by the second half of S5, and I want to rewrite it to accommodate minor character spoilers through the S5 finale ). Also, I still really like the central idea behind this fic (not at all apparent in this scene) and want to explore it. Any feedback you have on the characterizations of Amy, Rory, or the Doctor, as well as the prose and dialogue, would be really helpful.

Excerpt:

After three weeks -- or two and a half millenia, or most of an era, depending on how you count it -- Rory goes back to Leadworth. The Doctor looks a bit startled when he asks, but agrees. The whole thing catches Amy completely off-guard.

It's not tomorrow morning yet. It can be tomorrow morning anytime we want it to be. Tomorrow morning's not going anywhere. )

WIP #1 [SPN]: Three Dudes Tryin' to Prevent the Apocalypse.

Explanatory notes: No, that is really not its name. )

Why is this story (probably) abandoned? A couple reasons. )

What's the excerpt?
This is from the middle of the 7,000 words I'd written, picking up directly after Castiel's slapped with the baseball bat of mortality (metaphorically speaking) in the middle of a job. )

Excerpt:

In the car, Dean thumbs the buttons of his cell phone and cranes his neck around as he throws the car into reverse. The passenger seat jostles and tilts under Castiel as they retreat off the grooved dirt road and make a hard turn to the south. Sam's taken the back, an aberration from their usual custom. Castiel can't determine if it's a gesture of consideration, or if Sam's trying to keep him in his line of sight.

"Rufus," Dean says. "Listen, we've got kind of a thing happening -- uh, I'm not real sure, but we were in the middle of a job and now we've gotta bail. Indiana -- there's a pissed-off pioneer mixing it up with the Culver Military Academy. Think some stupid kid must've raided a grave or something -- who knows, probably some kinda hazing ritual. Chamber of Commerce has the old graveyards on the historic register. I'm calling in that favor. What? Yeah, sure, whatever." He thumbs the phone off again and shoves it back into his pocket with an eye-roll. "Jackass. See if I come running to stop him from committing mass murder next time."

Gee, Bobby, I dunno. I hear there's an apocalypse coming, might be good if when it gets here, our pet angel's not declawed.  )

Uh ... help?

The WIP posting is being cockblocked by technical difficulties, and I'm hoping one of you knows a work-around. When I try to copy the text over from my GoogleDoc, DW doesn't seem to be able to put a cut-tag around it. When I copied it text-only to Open Office, re-added the italics, and copied that into DW, I get annoying extra spacing at the paragraph breaks, despite OO being totally convinced the whole thing's single-spaced with no added paragraph formatting. Anybody have any tricks?

Hello, the internets! Have some WIPs.

Hi guys! I'm not dead, nor incapacitated, nor in the bottom of a hole. It's been several months of life where my energy has mostly gone into a number of relationships, new and old, of different kinds, more travel and visitors than is usual for me, lots of cooking, and my job, which I continue to love. Places my energy has not been mostly going:

1. Exercising.
2. Maintaining a clean house.
3. Half-completed home improvement tasks.
4. Visual art.
5. Writing.

I'm hoping to start turning things around on points #1-5, though I recognize the stupidity of trying to tackle all five full-throttle at once. Writing is definitely high on the list. As part of trying to get motivated on the WIP I do want to finish, as well as starting new projects, I'm declaring it Take Your WIP to Class Day, and I'm going to post chunks of stories that I think I'm probably not going to finish (or that will take massive rewriting to be viable due to excessive Jossing). These are pretty long excerpts, so I'm going to give them their own posts to lessen confusion, and trust that after hearing not word one from me for about six months, y'all won't fire me for a minor posting flurry. Plus, it's a great way to kill time at an airport (where I currently am) waiting for a delayed flight (which I'm currently doing). Previous time-killing activity was a strip club, buuuuuuut that's a different story entirely.

Anyway, look for two or three posts to follow this one over the next few days. As those of you who've been reading this journal since my SGA days know, stated intention to abandon a WIP is not necessarily reliable (see, uh, all 30k-odd words of Unidentified). Cheerleading, affectionate jeering, and constructive criticism are always welcome.

Nerd gift pimp: River Song & Amy Pond art nouveau prints!

Through one means and another, I know a whole klatch of ridonkulously talented and nerdy web comics artists and illustrators. One of them, the esteemed Bill Mudron, did a pair of gorgeous Alphonse Mucha style prints of River Song and Amy Pond, and I just found out he's selling prints online. The former image is spoilery for a plot point heavily implied by (but not actually occurring in) S5; the latter I've seen in person and it's absolutely jaw-dropping. If you're at a loss for a gift for a Who-nerd, in need of some girlpowered wall art, or just want to gawk at the pretty, I recommend you go take a look!

now are you going to take your shirt off or not?

If I could travel in time, I would go back, slap this comic onto the chest of so many people I've gotten into long debates with, and then just walk contentedly off.

What the ... what?

So apparently, Russell T. Davies is working on a Doctor Who film set to be released in 2012, and rumor has it they've tapped cut for potential casting spoiler, if it's true ) to be the Doctor.

...

It may be heresy to say this, guys, but a priori, I am concerned these two incredibly distinctive tastes may not taste great together. Thoughts?

Podfic Is Love

I really just want to signal-boost this, because I love podfic. If you do, please go give the readers some love, because they are amazing and deserve it. (FYI that the DW version has different artists signing up, so remember to check both!) Also, for those who don't listen to podfic often or widely, here's an idea: go read the love threads as a way to find new podfic artists to check out at the Audiofic Archive!

My thread, should you want to find it, is here.

And to all you podficcers out there: I love you all. I have never felt closer to you all or more grateful to be in fandom than when I click on my iPod and you start murmuring to me over my headphones, telling me all your favorite stories. You've gotten me through hard days, made me burst out laughing or flush red in public places, made me linger over household chores, and filled my days with countless hours of gratitude and delight. Thank you all so much.

[Repost] I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal (and I Just Don't Get Any Respect). [White Collar/Leverage Fic]

So a couple months back I had a plotbunny, [personal profile] shaenie (being an awful enabler a wonderful and supportive friend) encouraged me to write it, and I posted it to [community profile] queerlygen  during 3W4DW. And then, a couple of hours ago, [personal profile] shaenie also reminded me I hadn't actually posted it here yet.

Some days, it's really useful to have friends willing to function as external memory devices. Thanks, J!

Title: I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal (and I Just Don't Get Any Respect)
Universe: White Collar/Leverage crossover.
Type of Work: fiction.
Contains: mild swearing, minor references to various pairings.
Summary: "All right," Nate says, and smacks his hands together. "Let's go steal a con artist."
Notes: ~7,000 words. Big thanks to [personal profile] shaenie  for convincing me to write this and general cheerleading, and to [personal profile] anatsuno , [personal profile] kate , and [personal profile] celli  for being stellar betas. [personal profile] celli  gets an extra star for coming up with the title, which, yes, is a quote from The A-Team.

Reccariffic!

So, if you haven't caught on to this, one of my favorite things about betaing is that it means I get my hands on the good stuff FIRST. Yet again, this policy has worked out well for me. And thus I suggest you-all haul ass back to LJLand and go read A Passage That Sings, brand spankin' new Trek Reboot RPS by the ever-phenomenal dorkorific (who you may remember from other things like, uh, Shoebox Project). I spent most of the time reading this story alternately laughing in a very loud and unsubtle way, turned on, and cringing at the extent to which I may or may not identify with her Zach Quinto. On which note, her Zach Quinto, omg, is the best and the bitchiest thing ever, and I keep wanting to apologize to her Chris on his behalf. Also, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg getting into it over Kelis is worth the price of admission alone.

I'm not posting this as a commentary on anything other than the fact that I read it and immediately thought of at least three or four TV shows I've followed and/or am following. Yeah. Sometimes I also think 'friend' is too strong a word.
